Why 0.05 TH/s Is the Floor for Serious Bench Testing

When operators ask why we decline to assess USB-stick miners or legacy Block Erupters, the answer comes down to measurement resolution. Our bench instruments — a Yokogawa WT310E power analyser and a calibrated hash rate counter — produce reliable data only when the unit under test draws enough current to exceed the analyser’s noise floor.

At hash rates below roughly 0.05 TH/s (50 GH/s), signal-to-noise ratio in wattage readings becomes unreliable. A device drawing 15 watts can appear to fluctuate by ±3 watts depending on USB hub quality, cable length, and ambient EMI. That margin of error makes any report we issued legally indefensible.

What 0.05 TH/s Represents in Practice

Modern entry-level ASIC units start well above this threshold. An Antminer S9 at stock settings delivers around 13 TH/s. Even de-rated older units like the S7 still clear 4 TH/s. The 0.05 TH/s floor is therefore not an arbitrary marketing line — it marks the point where industrial-grade measurement equipment produces repeatable results.

Implications for Small Operators

If you run a mixed fleet with a few sub-threshold units alongside modern ASICs, we recommend excluding the small devices from formal assessment and focusing bench time on the racks that determine your breaker load. For those legacy units, manufacturer nameplate ratings remain the best available reference.
