Selecting a PSU for High-Draw ASIC Units

A mismatched power supply is one of the most common reasons ASIC units fail our intake inspection before testing even begins. The unit may hash correctly on a bench PSU, but voltage sag under load produces unstable readings and can damage hash boards over time.

Voltage and Phase Requirements

South Korean commercial facilities typically provide 220V single-phase or 380V three-phase depending on the building classification. Most ASIC PSUs shipped to this market accept 200โ€“240V input. Verify the input rating label before connecting โ€” units configured for 110V-only input will not survive Korean mains voltage.

Sizing Above Nameplate

We recommend PSUs rated at least 10% above the measured wall draw, not the nameplate figure. An S19 drawing 3,180 W on our bench should run on a PSU rated for 3,500 W continuous output or higher. Running at 95%+ PSU capacity increases ripple, heat, and failure probability.

Cable and Connector Quality

C14-to-C13 server cables rated for 15A are minimum. We have observed melted connectors on deployments using consumer-grade extension cords. For permanent installations, hardwired PDUs with individual breaker protection per rack are preferable to daisy-chained power strips.

Redundancy Considerations

Unlike data centre servers, most ASIC units lack dual-PSU redundancy. A PSU failure means zero hash until replacement. Keeping one spare PSU per 20 units is a reasonable stocking level for mid-scale operators in our experience.
